alt+yd cover design
alt+yd is a curation of the graduation projects done by the final year students of the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad that explore alternative design practices and futures of India.
This is a book cover I designed for alt+yd, during a 2-day workshop on experimental foiling methods facilitated by Harshali Paralikar, Prajjwal Chandra, Manan Pahwa and Amruta Supate.
These limited edition copies of alt+yd were displayed at the Tiny Tech Zines Fair, Los Angeles.
Analog Algorithms
Prajjwal Chandra introduced us to generative art through analog algorithms.
Generative art refers to art that in whole or in part has been created with the use of an autonomous system that can independently determine features of an artwork that would otherwise require decisions made directly by the artist.
These algorithms were made without any digital tools.
Process for artwork
I started by plotting 2 circles from the baseline with radii corresponding to the initials of the 11 students whose projects were in the book.
Then I plotted a third circle with the radius corresponding to the first letter of the project title.
The direction from the baseline depended on whether the initials contained a vowel.
Foiling
The foil used for this technique is a sheet of iridescent plastic with a waxy layer at the back, when heated against a bonding surface, the iridescence fuses and the plastic peels off.
The process is shown below.
